Direct-to-Fan Monetisation: SoundCloud Launches Zero-Commission Track DownloadsÂ
The digital landscape moves fast, and staying informed is key to building a sustainable career in today's music industry.
In a significant update for independent creators, SoundCloud has officially launched a beta feature allowing select artists to sell track downloads directly from their profiles—taking 0% commission on those direct sales.
Here is a breakdown of what this update means, how it works, and why direct-to-fan models remain a vital strategy for growth.
While streaming continues to dominate the global music market, direct sales offer artists significantly higher profit margins per fan interaction. Here is how the new feature is structured:
100% Sales Proceeds: SoundCloud is taking zero cut from direct downloads. Creators retain full proceeds from every sale (excluding standard payment processing fees and local taxes).
Flexible Pricing & Formats: Participating artists can set their own pricing for eligible tracks. Fans receive the exact audio format uploaded by the creator, including high-quality WAV files and MP3s.
Integrated Experience: Fans can browse, preview, buy, and download tracks seamlessly without being redirected to third-party storefronts.
Beta Rollout: The initial phase is live for a select group of US-based Artist Pro creators with Fan Support enabled. Full access is scheduled to expand to all eligible creators later this year.
Recent industry reports from the IFPI indicate that while digital downloads represent a smaller percentage of total global recorded music revenue compared to streaming, superfans behave very differently than casual listeners. Data shows that dedicated fans are willing to spend up to five times more to support artists they love directly.
Until now, hundreds of thousands of creators were linking SoundCloud tracks out to external download stores or storefront platforms (which often keep 10% to 15% of digital sales). Bringing zero-commission direct downloads onto the platform allows artists to:
Monetise Superfans: Capture higher-value transactions directly where community engagement happens.
Consolidate Operations: Build an audience, release music, and sell products in a single ecosystem rather than sending traffic away.
Control Pricing & Distribution: Decide which releases are stream-only and which are available for purchase.
This move follows a broader industry shift towards empowering independent artists through direct-to-fan storefronts, follower-exclusive releases, and physical merchandise bundling.
Streaming builds reach, but direct fan relationships build longevity.
As music administration and distribution tools continue to evolve, we encourage all our clients to explore hybrid monetisation models. When you combine widespread DSP distribution with direct-to-fan sales and active engagement, you create a balanced revenue foundation that doesn't rely solely on stream counts.
We will continue tracking this rollout as it becomes available globally. Make sure your release assets, metadata, and artist profiles are fully optimised so you can take advantage of new monetisation features the moment they launch.
